Samuel Tissot, wrote in a 1758 monograph on the ill side-effects of
masturbation: everything from pimples to rheumatism, not forgetting muddleheadedness and
headaches and hemorrhoids. Poor fellow, what a price for him to pay.
For a good while (1700-1900), Western medical wisdom viewed masturbation
as draining vital energies and somehow related to mental illness. Rather bizarre and kinky
methods were used to discourage masturbation.
